It is the graduation season now, and I am working in data science for 4 years.

I was asked how to be a data scientist sometimes. You possibly hear that you need programming, Machine learning, and domain knowledge. In this post, I would like to share how I prepared these areas:

Programming

The first programming language I learned was SAS in an insurance company. It is a convenient and stable language for EDA (Exploratory data analysis) and even some statistical models, like survival analysis, which is better than the python package.

As machine learning was rising, SAS could serve our purpose anymore, and so we shifted to adopt R for some machine learning libraries like random forest and XGboost.

Later, my colleagues and I found Python was much more useful, and we learned python together. It is worth mentioning:

  • In the beginning, I learned a lot of python in Codewars, a good learning platform for learning pure python. In each practice, you need to produce the correct coding and need to consider the run-time. Of course, you learn the solutions from other people.
  • Built Python…
